Okay, so you are probably wondering by now at the post’s title and wondering where the fireworks come in. My reference to the fireworks is specifically related to my tendency to visit Maine the week of July 4th.
I love, love visiting the Maine during this week, specifically the town of Whitefield for its charming 4th of July celebration which includes a parade so generous with the candies that kids in the know bring baggies to collect up their prizes and a hilarious “float” by a local politically minded group of friends which provides good natured, visual and auditory commentary on hot-button issues (themes change annually and this year the group expressed their concern over the US’s use of drones). The Whitefield celebration also hosts a fair of sorts which includes bouncy castles, a jumble sale, auction and an old fashioned cake walk (you walk in circles to music and when it stops, if you are in the right spot you win a full size, locally baked and donated cake).
A huge highlight for many over the holiday period is the firework displays put on by many of the regions and towns in the mid-coast. Two favourite’s with my family is the fireworks at Camden (over the harbor) and slightly in-land at Damariscotta (over the river which is a tidal estuary of the Gulf of Maine). Both areas provide a lovely fireworks display and convivial settings – in Camden viewing is generally from the park and in Damariscotta from the bridge or a local restaurant patio overlooking the water (I like Schooner’s Landing for it’s decent food, giant patio and it’s Bloody Mary adorned with a lobster claw). http://www.schoonerlandingmaine.com/index.php
These are just two of the many local areas in Maine that put on shows. The Maine Fire Marshall has helpfully put together a searchable database of fireworks displays for July 4th that is updated on a yearly basis. I have included a link to the database and hope that if you choose to travel to Maine during that time period, it will help you find a display close to you. http://pfr.informe.org/almsonline/almsquery/(X(1)S(iv3bf2fys2uucu5tuuq5d4en))/SearchEvent.aspx?board=5022&AspxAutoDetectCookieSupport=1
